Hypnobirthing and how the dishes landed outside

Posted on 13. Oct, 2010 by pinky in Pinky

I was lazing in bed this morning, last night I had struggled to get to sleep and finally managed to count the last sheep at about 2am. At 8:45 – okay it might have been closer to 9 *blush* I crawl out of bed and walk to the kitchen. Disaster zone before my eyes. I was lazy last night and decided to knit a new hat for my new knitting project and tweet for name ideas rather than wash the dishes. And there were a lot! I  had made the best spinach and ricotta canelloni ever, I was hesitant that the kids would not eat it, but my fears were in vain they fought over the last piece.

The secret was a little bacon added to with onion and garlic to the spinach and ricotta and blending it all very finely. But I think even without the bacon they might have eaten it. But making it is a bit like making Lasagna, very yummy but a lot of pots and frying pans. But I digress, so as I peered through bleary eyes at the dishes I suddenly remember I have a client coming to look at a sling at 9:30! There is no way I can shower, vacuum and wash dishes in half and hour. So what does any resourceful Pink Haired Girl do – pile the dishes outside of course!

Hair washed, teeth brushed, vacuumed and any junk left lying around thrown into the bedroom and the door closed. Done! All ready by 9:30. What you have to understand is that until we move later this month we have one living area which has my messy desk, the TV area a couch, the kids play area, the dinning room table and chairs and all the Earth Babies stock on shelves in the one room. It is open plan to the kitchen and the bedrooms lead off the one big room. It is small, and very small for 4 of us without a business run from home or the space needed for home schooling.

To give you an idea, some photos taken the other day:

The lady I met was lovely, my heart did stop as she was trying walking with her baby in the sling and walked through the kitchen. I was so sure she would look outside and see my dirty secret. I don’t think she did see them, but I tried to pretend like all was okay, otherwise I might have been the colour of my hair!

Turns out she had a home birth with the same midwife that I am using. It was nice to hear from someone who has gone through the birth process with her, and that she is indeed as lovely as I knew she would be. Supportive but hands off, just what I want. She then mentioned that she had used hypnobirthing too. Also the same course with the lady in Durbanville that I was hoping to go to. She totally reaffirmed my desire to do the course and use hypnobirthing. She had a non hypnobirth the first time and was able to overcome the painful experience that was and have a peaceful calm 2nd birth.

The hypnobirthing idea is that when totally relaxed and in-tune with her body, a woman can birth gently and without pain and medication. The pain adrenaline cycle that we have come to know in our modern society is counter productive to birth, as it causes the woman to be tense and afraid. Self hypnosis is a state that we all experience everyday, I am sure you have been driving and suddenly can’t remember the last km or 2. It is like a relaxed daydream. You are fully able to be 100% in the moment if needs be but it facilitates deep relaxation.

I have booked our course and will tell you more as I learn it. In the mean time here is a link to the Durbanville Hypnobirth website I think The Geek is skeptical but to his credit he is willing to support me in anyway he can and I have heard that the hypnobirthing really gives the partner a definite role and way to be involved and supportive. If I say I can’t wait for the birth I really mean it.

Once we have better internet I want to watch lots of YouTube hypnobirth videos to condition my mind that peaceful birth is possible. It is the only reason that makes me consider filming mine – maybe it would help someone else one day to have a calm birth. As for the life streaming and people watching the show in real time – maybe not so much.

Filming?! Did you say filming? Well I hope that I’ll be the first person you come to. *Grin*

Barbs I felt like diving across the room and blocking her path :D
Robi: I know that The Geek is not that comfortable with the filming idea and I don’t want it to feel like too many people. Sharon is already going to be there for photos, the kids, the midwife and maybe someone for the kids. He is really private and I think it would be difficult for him, but maybe I speak too much for him. The only things that sways my decision is that I want to watch YouTube videos to help me and in turn maybe I should help other…. hmmmm needs some thought. Geek what do you think??

Hmmm, I am private by nature and shy, but this ultimately Pinky decency and most intimate moment being filmed. I’ll abide by her choice as long as it avoids any similarity to a circus.

I am still on the fence, but agree that any circus like situation should be avoided, we already have quite an audience. I really want it to feel intimate.

    Hypnobirthing is great.
And I’m a sceptic generally, but controlling your breathing really does change your bodies reactions. My birthing pictures look like I’m asleep, except for the slight frown of concentration on my face during a surge!
And the visualisation is the kind of thing used by top athletes to focus their performance.
The more your mind and body practice something the easier it is to do when needed.
Plus I was so chilled out during pregnancy because of all the relaxation I was doing, despite the discomfort of pelvic pain.

Katherine it is really nice to get feedback from those who have used this and really benefited from it. I have booked our course and am excited. I hope that The Geek will feel less skeptical as we go along. How did Ian feel?

I used hypnosis for my last two births and it was great! I have gathered over 250 birth stories from moms using Hypnobabies for birth and quite a few videos to at http://www.pregnancybirthandbabies.com

The videos usually help get dads on board. :)

Sheridan – thanks so much really nice to have birth stories to read that reinforce the birth I want rather than pain and agony
